Sunil is a thought leader in innovation and smart cities and a practitioner in city strategy, development and international relations. Sunil holds a PhD in governance and public assets from the University of Sydney and has been an adjunct academic at the USYD and UNSW since 2008. Sunil held a senior strategy and innovation position in the NSW Government, is an advisory member at ETI, Sorbonne University, Paris, and earlier served as Metropolis Ambassador and Advisor for Metropolis Org, 2007-18, where he represented over 120 member cities on the UN World Economic Forum and multilaterals including the World Bank. Sunil was a board member for the Geneva Foundation GPP, Citiscope (Reuters) and the Australian Institute of Urban Studies, an advisor for UN Compact Cities, an associate at ICS, UWS, and he has served as a jury member for international city awards and audit & peer review committees.

AI & Digital Twins for Smart Cities and Industrial Corridors

Future Cities

This panel asks how it actually gets run day to day — not with more dashboards, but with digital twins: live, continuously updated virtual models of a city or corridor that let planners simulate, predict and intervene before problems happen rather than after. It’s not hypothetical for Sarawak — the state is already piloting exactly this approach in its own water supply sector, and this panel scales that same thinking up to the smart cities and industrial corridors the rest of the track has been building toward. It also sets up the natural next question: once intelligence is built into the infrastructure, what does that unlock for the utilities running underneath it — the subject the closing panel picks up.
