Professor Lau Hieng Ho has over two decades of experience in teaching, research, and leadership in higher education, and has served as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of Swinburne Sarawak since 2021. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering and a PhD from Oxford Brookes University, UK, a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching from Curtin University, and a Graduate Certificate of Learning and Teaching from Swinburne University of Technology. He is a Professional Engineer with a Practising Certificate registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM), and a Chartered Professional Engineer with Engineers Australia (EA). Before his current appointment, he served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the Sarawak campus (2019–2021), during which he led Swinburne Sarawak’s academic team through the rapid transition to online teaching and learning at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also broadened the range of courses offered at the Sarawak campus, reshaping its academic profile in teaching and learning, and establishing industry immersion pathways to better prepare graduates for a changing world of work. Prior to joining Swinburne, Professor Lau spent over 15 years at Curtin University Malaysia, where he held progressively senior academic and leadership roles, culminating in his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science. His contributions included developing new research areas, modernising curricula, establishing teaching facilities, and implementing staff mentoring initiatives.
Throughout his career, Professor Lau has contributed to academic and professional development, transnational education, and university-industry linkages. Professor Lau is an internationally respected researcher specialising in cold-formed steel construction, with broader interests in construction waste management and sustainable development. He has authored or co-authored over 100 journal papers, conference papers, book chapters, and technical articles, with an established track record in research grants. He has also served as a technical consultant to companies in the construction and engineering sectors. Professor Lau is actively involved in several engineering professional bodies. He currently serves as Vice President of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), a member of the IEM Executive Committee, Chairman of the IEM Information & Publications Standing Committee, and Chief Editor of IEM Publications.
